What is 5005 aluminium?

5005 aluminium alloy is a member of the 5000 series of aluminium-magnesium wrought alloys. It has medium strength, good weldability, but is not used for casting. It can attain moderate to high strength by cold working.

Basic properties

5005 is an aluminium alloy with good resistance to atmospheric corrosion. It is commonly used in architectural and decorative applications. It also has the low density and excellent thermal conductivity common to all aluminium alloys and is the most commonly used grade of aluminium in plate and sheet form.

Applications

5005 aluminium sheet is often preferred when the material will be anodised and used in an architectural application like sills, flashings, sills and curtain walls. Architects often specify 5005 grade for anodised aluminium architectural metal work. If the application does not require good aesthetics, 5052 or 6061 alloys are acceptable substitutes for 5005 aluminium.
